Starting Over at 65: A New Chapter in Life

As we approach our 65th birthday, we may feel a sense of restlessness, a desire to start anew, to leave behind the familiar and embark on a fresh journey. This is a wonderful opportunity to re-evaluate our priorities, to assess our values, and to seek guidance from God. As Jesus said, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). This means being willing to let go of our old ways, to surrender our will to God's, and to follow His process of training. It requires intentionality, a willingness to apprentice under Jesus and learn from Him.

Embracing a New Rule of Life

In order to start over at 65, we need to adopt a new Rule of Life, one that reflects our values and priorities. A Rule of Life is a personal guide that helps us live intentionally, to focus on what is truly important. As the author suggests, "Start where you are, not where you should be." This means acknowledging our current circumstances, our strengths and weaknesses, and our limitations. It means being honest with ourselves, and seeking God's guidance to help us discern our next steps. As we create our Rule of Life, we need to be intentional about our relationships, our priorities, and our habits. We need to ask ourselves, "What does it mean to follow Jesus in my daily life?" and "How can I live in a way that honors Him?"

Seeking God's Guidance

As we embark on this new chapter in life, we need to seek God's guidance and wisdom. We need to trust that He is almighty, that He can do what He says He can do. We need to believe that He can restore us, renew us, and revitalize us. As the Bible says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). We need to remember that our strength comes not from ourselves, but from God. We need to be willing to surrender our will to His, to trust in His goodness, and to follow His lead. As we do, we will discover a new sense of purpose, a new sense of direction, and a new sense of joy. We will learn to live a life that is truly fulfilling, a life that honors God and brings glory to His name.
