Understanding the Call to Missions

The call to missions is a personal and spiritual journey that requires discernment, prayer, and guidance from God. It is not something that can be forced or manipulated, but rather it is a call that arises from within. To determine if you are being called to missions, you must first understand what missions means to you. Is it about serving others, spreading the gospel, or making a difference in the world? Or is it about personal fulfillment, adventure, or escaping the mundane? The Bible teaches that our purpose in life is not to build a safe place, but to serve and love others, bringing Jesus into every corner of our lives (2 Timothy 2:4).

Discerning the Call

Discerning the call to missions involves listening to God's voice and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. This requires a willingness to be called, to desire it, and to seek it (Matthew 9:38). Not everyone is called to foreign missionary work, but every Christian is called to be a missionary in their own context (Matthew 28:18-20). To discern the call, you must ask yourself questions like: What are my passions and gifts? What are my strengths and weaknesses? What are the needs of the world and how can I contribute? You must also seek guidance from spiritual mentors, prayer, and Bible study. The Bible teaches that it is our duty as Christians to proclaim the gospel to the whole world, trusting that God has so providentially ordered things that through us the good news will come to those who have not heard (Romans 10:14-15).

Implications of the Call

If you feel called to missions, whether short-term or long-term, there are significant implications that come with it. You must be willing to surrender your life to God's purposes, embracing the unknown and the challenges that come with it. You must also be willing to undergo training, preparation, and equipping to fulfill your mission. The Bible teaches that becoming the people God created us to be and doing the work God has given us to do is a lifelong journey (Psalm 138:8). As you embark on this journey, you must be prepared to face obstacles, setbacks, and doubts. However, with faith, perseverance, and trust in God, you can overcome these challenges and fulfill your mission. Remember, the call to missions is not just about serving others, but also about being transformed by God's love and purpose in your life (Romans 12:1-2).
