what's the point of living if it's just going to be painful?
The point of living is not to avoid pain, but to live a life that reflects Christian values and teachings. This is not to say that we should seek out pain or hardships, but rather that we should not be controlled by a desire to avoid pain. We are all going to experience pain and suffering in this life, and it is how we respond to it that matters. As the Bible says, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). This means that our pain and suffering can actually be used to help us grow in our faith and to become more like Christ.
The problem is that we often try to escape or avoid pain, rather than seeing it as an opportunity for growth and transformation. This can lead to a culture that idolizes happiness and seeks to avoid pain at all costs, but this is not a healthy or sustainable approach to life. As the Bible says, "We are all for less pain, but all suffering is not to be escaped" (N.T. Wright). This means that we need to learn to live with pain and suffering in a way that is consistent with our Christian values and teachings. We need to see pain and suffering as a reminder of our human brokenness and alienation from God, and as an opportunity to seek outside help and guidance.
Ultimately, the point of living is not to avoid pain, but to live a life that is transformed by our relationship with Christ. This means that we need to be willing to suffer and die to ourselves, in order to be raised to new life in Christ. As the Bible says, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). This means that our pain and suffering can actually be a catalyst for spiritual growth and transformation, and that we can learn to see it as a means of becoming more like Christ.
