God is called jealous because He continually seeks to protect His own honor. This is evident in the way He commands His people not to bow down to idols or serve them, saying, "for I the Lord your God am a jealous God" (Ex. 20:5). He desires to have a personal relationship with His people and to be the one and only object of their devotion. This is why He says, "My glory I will not give to another" (Isa. 48:11). God's jealousy is not a negative emotion like human jealousy, but rather a burning desire to please Him and to have His people rightly related to Him.

The Bible represents God as being jealous in this way, and it is a holy and righteous jealousy. It is not a compound of frustration, envy, and spite, but rather a desire to vindicate His rule and righteousness by showing His sovereignty in judgment. This is evident in the way God deals with His people when they turn away from Him and worship idols. He says, "I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me" (Ex. 20:5). This is not a cruel or capricious God, but rather a God who is zealous for His own honor and who will not share His glory with anyone else.

The concept of God's jealousy may seem strange or even negative to us, but it is an essential aspect of His nature. It is a reminder that God is a God of justice and righteousness, who will not tolerate sin or disobedience. At the same time, it is a call to His people to be positively and passionately devoted to Him, to His person, His cause, and His honor. This is what it means to have a zeal for God, and it is a fundamental aspect of the Christian life. As the Bible says, "Let us be zealous for the better things" (Gal. 4:18). We are called to be like God, to have a zeal for Him and for His honor, and to live our lives in a way that reflects that zeal.
