Can I still find joy in life with a permanent disability?

Joy is not the opposite of depression. It is deeper than depression. Therefore, you can experience both. Depression is the relentless rain. Joy is the rock. Whether depression is present or not, you can stand on joy. Joy is not something that you can find or lose. It is not a feeling that you can experience or not experience. Joy abides and grows over time as you add to what you have. Put differently, you can never use joy up, and it actually increases the more you add to what you have.

There are many examples of people with disabilities who have found joy in life. For example, one survey indicates that 99 percent of adults with Down syndrome report that they are happy with their lives. This shows that despite the challenges of a permanent disability, it is possible to find joy and happiness. In fact, the Bible teaches that joy can even be found in the midst of suffering. Psalm 126:1-2 says, "When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them." This psalm shows that even in times of great suffering, God can bring joy and happiness.

The key to finding joy in life with a permanent disability is to focus on what you can do, not what you cannot do. As the Bible says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7). This means that even in the midst of suffering, you can find peace and joy through your relationship with God. By focusing on what you can do and by trusting in God's sovereignty, you can find joy in life with a permanent disability. In fact, the Bible says, "You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:11). This means that even in the midst of suffering, God can bring joy and happiness into your life.
