Understanding Gods Sovereignty in Suffering

The question of why God took away your ability to work can be a challenging one, especially when we feel that our circumstances are not in line with Gods goodness and justice. In the Book of Job, we see a similar scenario where Job questions Gods sovereignty and goodness in the midst of his sufferings. However, as the story unfolds, Job comes to realize that Gods ways are not our ways, and that His sovereignty is not limited by our understanding of what is good or just. God does not need to explain His actions to us, for He is the Creator and we are the creatures.

The Purpose of Suffering

It is possible that Gods providence is indicating that we are in the wrong place at the wrong time for the wrong reason. Perhaps our circumstances are not a reflection of Gods goodness or justice, but rather a opportunity for us to learn and grow in our faith. The Book of Job teaches us that suffering can be a means of grace, allowing God to work in our lives and bring us closer to Him. If God rewarded us immediately, we would be destroyed, for our inherent depravity would lead us to become users of God. By allowing us to experience suffering, God is able to work in our lives and bring us to a place of dependence on Him.

Serving the Lord in Our Work

As Christians, we are called to serve the Lord in all that we do, including our work. Whether we are an employer, an employee, or self-employed, we have a heavenly Master who desires to be glorified in our lives. The challenge is for us to understand Gods purpose in our work and be wholehearted about it, as if we were serving the Lord, not people. This means that we must be willing to surrender our lives to God and trust in His sovereignty, even when we do not understand why things are happening the way they are. By doing so, we can learn to love God for Himself alone, just like Job did, and find joy and fulfillment in our lives, even in the midst of suffering.
