Understanding the Nature of Darkness

The Bible describes darkness as a lack of light, not a physical absence of matter or energy. In Psalm 36:9, it is written, "For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light." This verse highlights that darkness is a condition of the human mind, not a physical reality. The Bible also teaches that God's presence is not limited by darkness; rather, He is present even in the midst of it. As Psalm 139:7-12 states, "Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I say, 'Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,' even the darkness will not be dark to you; indeed, the night shines like the day because of your light."

The Problem of Unseen Darkness

The darkness we experience is not just a physical absence of light, but also a spiritual absence of God's presence. This unseen darkness can be overwhelming, making it difficult to see a way out. As the Bible says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). Our minds can become clouded by sin and self-deception, making it hard to discern the truth. However, God's light can pierce through this darkness, revealing our true condition and the need for redemption. As Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path."

Finding Hope in the Light

In the midst of darkness, we can find hope in the light of God's presence. The Bible teaches that God's light can overcome even the darkest of situations. As John 1:5 says, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." This means that even in the most difficult circumstances, God's presence can bring hope and guidance.
