Lying affects our relationship with God in several profound ways. Firstly, it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6)there is nothing false in him. The Comforter is called the Spirit of truth (Jn 16:13). When we lie, we also harbor unbelief and lies in our heart about God. This can lead to self-deception and a lack of trust in God's promises. We may begin to believe that God is not really good or that he is holding out on us. This can cause us to doubt God's character and his promises, leading to a breakdown in our relationship with him. The Bible warns us that when we lie, we can become hardened by sin's deceitfulness (Heb. 3:12-13). This means that lying can lead to a gradual decrease in our sensitivity to God's presence and his promises.

Ultimately, lying breaks a relationship with God because it is a rejection of his character and his promises. When we lie, we are saying that we do not trust God's word and that we do not believe in his character. This can lead to a sense of disconnection and distance from God. However, it is never too late to turn from lies and restore our relationship with God. We can learn to trust in his promises and character, and to reflect his truth in our lives. The Bible promises that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9). This means that God is always willing to forgive and restore our relationship with him, even when we have lied.
