The Impact of Lying on Our Relationship with God

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6)there is nothing false in him." The Comforter is called the Spirit of truth (Jn 16:13). When we lie, we are, in essence, denying the truth of God's character. This is not only a problem because it contradicts God's nature, but also because it affects our relationship with Him. When we lie, we are not only deceiving others, but also ourselves, and this can lead to a disconnection from God.

Why We Lie and the Consequences of Lying

We lie for various reasons, including to avoid consequences, to manipulate others, or to protect our own interests. However, the Bible promises that a false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape (Proverbs 19:5). Lying destroys oneself, one's relationships, and one's connection to God. It can also lead to a cycle of self-deception, where we believe lies about God, others, and ourselves, which in turn inspire other lies. Simply asking, "Why do we lie?" can help us identify the underlying issues and seek God's truth.

The Importance of Honesty in Our Relationship with God

The Bible teaches us that honesty is essential in our relationship with God. When we lie, we are not only dishonoring God, but also diminishing His glory. As those created in God's image, we are called to reflect His character, which includes truthfulness. When we lie, we are, in effect, saying that God's character is not sufficient, and that we need to add our own version of truth to His. This is a false assumption, and one that can lead to a distorted view of God and our relationship with Him. By being honest and truthful, we can deepen our relationship with God and reflect His character in our lives. We can also ask ourselves, "What lies do we believe about God that give us permission to tell lies?" and seek to replace those lies with God's truth. By doing so, we can avoid the consequences of lying and deepen our connection with God.
