Understanding Trust in God's Sovereignty

Trusting in God's sovereignty is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith. It means acknowledging that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good, and that He exercises His power in harmony with His other attributes, especially His justice. This trust is not based on abstract sovereignty, but on the fact that God has proven Himself trustworthy through His character and actions. When we trust in God's sovereignty, we are saying that we need Him, that our search for self-satisfaction has been a failure, and that we now turn to the One who has been our true destination all along.

The Paradox of Trusting God

Trusting God is a paradoxical act, for when we trust Him, we are saying that we need Him, yet we are also acknowledging that He is all-sufficient and that He can meet all our needs. This trust is qualitatively different from obeying and trusting a fellow human being, for the God-human relationship is inassimilable to a human-human relationship. Only when we trust in God's sovereignty can we have the strength to believe consistently that God truly can do as He pleases with His creation. This faith gives us the confidence to proclaim the gospel to all nations, knowing that God is working out His purposes in all things, and that He will accomplish all that He intends in His overarching purposes. In this sense, trusting in God's sovereignty is not a hindrance to evangelistic responsibility, but a necessary foundation for it.
