Is God Listening?

God is always listening, and He does answer all of our prayers, even if sometimes the answer is no or wait. However, the question remains, "Is God even listening to me?" This question arises from our perception that God seems to be indifferent to our prayers. The shrug and indifference that this so often elicits reveals the irrationality within us all. We want God to seem that He has heard our prayers, but God is always aware of our prayers, even if we don't feel His presence.

The Challenge of Listening

The challenge of listening to God is a significant part of our Christian walk. We are told to be "swift to hear" (Jam 1:19) and "He who has an ear, let him hear" (Re 2:7). Listening to God involves being attentive to His voice, which can be conveyed through various means, such as prayer, Scripture, nature, or a servant of God. We must make a conscious choice to listen to God, and our attention must be focused on Him. If we fail to listen to God's directives, we may lead to sin and deter from living a robust Christian life.

Inviting God's Presence

Listening to God invites His presence in our lives. When we listen to God, we open ourselves to His guidance and direction. As Dr. John Barger says, "The question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are listening." By listening to God, we can experience His covenant loyalty and respond with praise and prayer. Jesus teaches that those who are of God hear His words, while those who are not do not (John 8:47). Therefore, we must strive to listen to God with understanding and acceptance, making room for His presence in our lives.
