The Biblical Perspective on Medical Debt

From a biblical perspective, medical debt is not inherently wrong or immoral. However, the inability to meet medical obligations due to financial constraints can be a source of great stress and anxiety. In the Bible, we find no clear-cut teaching outlawing any and all debt, but rather a focus on the importance of living responsibly and honoring our financial commitments (Proverbs 6:1-5). The Bible does, however, emphasize the importance of showing compassion and kindness to those in need, including those who are struggling with debt (Matthew 5:42, Luke 6:30).

The Problem of Unpayable Debt

When it comes to medical debt, the issue is often not just a matter of not having enough money to pay, but rather a lack of ability to pay due to circumstances beyond one's control. In such cases, the Bible teaches that we should not try to wipe out the debt by performing some sort of "bargain" or trying to put God in our debt (Romans 11:36). Rather, we should seek to work out a reasonable payment plan or seek assistance from others, such as a loan or financial aid (Proverbs 22:7). This approach is in line with the biblical concept of the Jubilee year, which calls for the cancellation of debts and the restoration of justice (Leviticus 25:8-55).

A Christian Response to Medical Debt

As Christians, we are called to live responsibly and honor our financial commitments, while also showing compassion and kindness to those in need. When faced with medical debt, we should seek to work out a reasonable payment plan or seek assistance from others. We should also be mindful of our own financial obligations and avoid accumulating debt that we cannot pay. By living responsibly and showing compassion to those in need, we can demonstrate the love and kindness of Christ to a world in need. As the Bible says, "Let your one continuing debt be the debt of love" (Romans 13:8). By prioritizing love and kindness, we can find a way to make medical debt manageable and even disappear, not through some sort of "bargain" or magical solution, but through the power of God's love and provision.
