What is the value of a helping hand in a chaotic world?
The Value of a Helping Hand in a Chaotic World
Helping others is not only beneficial for the recipient but also for the giver. Studies have shown that volunteering and caring for others are good for our mental and physical health (Evidence #3). Generosity is impossible with closed fists, and we can only give when we have open palms. Jesus made the strange claim that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). He commanded us to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:31).
Generosity is not limited by what the recipients deserve, but consistently goes beyond it. It expresses the simple wish that others should have what they need to make them happy. When we give generously, we break the power of greed in our lives and set our minds free from vexatious cares. We also experience happiness through serving others instead of using them. This happiness is not bad for us, but rather a joy that comes from giving. As Chrysostom said, "We should not be mean and calculating with what we have but give with a generous hand."
A mature and wise person will manage and sacrificially give to help others. This is not a one-time act, but a settled and continuing gift. We should not be mean and calculating with what we have, but give with a generous hand. As the Bible says, "Generosity: Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed" (1 Timothy 6:18-19). By giving generously, we demonstrate our trust in God's sovereignty and provision in our lives.
