Financial Struggles and the Will of God

When facing financial struggles, such as being unable to pay bills, it's natural to wonder if God is still in control. The Bible teaches us that God is sovereign over all creation, including our finances (Psalm 103:19-22). However, this does not mean that God directly causes financial struggles or debt. Instead, God often uses our financial struggles to teach us valuable lessons about His character, such as His love, mercy, and forgiveness.

Scriptural Teaching on Debt

While the Bible does not explicitly outlaw debt, it does emphasize the importance of being responsible with our finances (Proverbs 22:7). In fact, Paul writes that he will repay a debt to the Philippian church, demonstrating that debt can be a legitimate obligation (Philippians 4:17-18). However, when debt becomes overwhelming and we are unable to meet our obligations, it can be a sign of a deeper issue, such as a lack of trust in God's provision or a failure to prioritize our relationship with Him. A Biblical Approach to Financial Struggles

So, what can we do when we're struggling to pay bills? First, we must acknowledge our dependence on God and trust in His provision (Philippians 4:19). We can also seek wise counsel from financial advisors, such as Larry Burkett, who emphasize the importance of budgeting, saving, and responsible spending. Additionally, we can prioritize our spiritual well-being by staying connected to our faith community and practicing disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and scripture study. By doing so, we can find peace and hope in the midst of financial struggles, knowing that God is still in control and that He desires to bless us abundantly (Psalm 37:4). Ultimately, our goal should be to live a life that reflects God's character and values, even in the midst of financial struggles. As the Bible says, "Let your one continuing debt be the debt of love" (Romans 13:8).
