The Biblical Perspective on Art and Creativity in Worship and Ministry
The Bible offers a unique understanding of society and culture, reflecting who God really is. In this chapter, we focus on four features of the biblical God that make Christian engagement with culture distinctive and creative. The biblical God is a God of creativity, who calls us to participate with him in this endeavor, known as the cultural mandate. This is an honor to the Lord, engaging in business that supports God's work and is carried out in the context of relationships and good stewardship of both time and money.
The Christian lives in tension when it comes to art and creativity. On one hand, art is allowed, but it has the potential to become idolatrous. The second commandment forbids the creation of images that depict God, as well as the worship of such images. Therefore, Christian art must be careful not to manipulate statues or icons to get closer to God. Instead, it should seek to glorify God and bring the message of the Bible to life in a way that is pleasing to Him.
Christian art participates in the emplotted reality of the Bible, just as much as do Christian ethics or politics. The major and minor themes in the Bible should be reflected in Christian art, but not necessarily in perfect proportion. Art should be rhythmed biblically, incorporating at least three themes: the glory of God, the majesty of God, and the goodness of God. This means that Christian art should be creative and innovative, while still reflecting the values and teachings of the Bible. Ultimately, the goal of Christian art is to glorify God and bring the message of the Bible to life in a way that is pleasing to Him.
