The Nature of Sin

Sin is a pervasive and subtle character, as stated in Romans 7:18, where it says, "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells." Jesus assumed that other men were sinful, yet He never found sin in Himself. This is evident in the Gospels, where Jesus is constantly dealing with the problem of sin in others but never attributes it to Himself.

The Sinlessness of Jesus

Jesus' sinlessness is a crucial aspect of His teachings. He claimed to be righteous and asked His hearers if they could prove Him guilty of sin (John 8:46). No one replied, indicating that they could not find any evidence of sin in His life. The apostles also confirmed Jesus' sinless life, with Peter writing, "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth" (1 Peter 2:22). John wrote, "He appeared in a body, appeased through death by his own blood, to bear the sin of many, and to make us righteous" (1 John 3:5).

The Consequences of Sin

The Bible teaches that sin has consequences, including enslavement and separation from God. Jesus taught that sin would be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin (Romans 6:6). However, sin also leads to death, as stated in Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Jesus' teachings on sin emphasize the importance of recognizing and repenting from sin, and trusting in His redemptive power to overcome it. As stated in 2 Corinthians 5:21, "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." This demonstrates Jesus' role as the sin-bearer, who took the consequences of sin upon Himself so that we might be made righteous through faith in Him.
