Your Question:

What is the role of humility in the face of success and recognition?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've had the privilege of studying and teaching about the importance of humility in the face of success and recognition. According to the Bible, humility is a virtue that is characterized by modesty and submission, and it's rooted in our existence as creatures dependent on God's grace. As Andrew Murray points out, human humility is grounded in our very existence as creatures, and it's difficult to be dependent on God and thankful to God while being arrogant.

In my experience, humility is essential for maintaining unity and peace among believers. As the Bible says, "the pursuit of unity works to maintain the linkage of peace among believers, a connection they have with each other as they share in the Spirit" (1 Cor. 12:13). This is not a peace to be gained, but one that is to be maintained through humility, faith, and hope. When we recognize our dependence on God and our place in the community of believers, we're more likely to maintain unity and peace.

However, it's also possible for pride to masquerade as humility. Self-denigration or putting ourselves down may be an attempt to gain attention or avoid responsibility. As the Bible says, "what if Louis Pasteur had said that the germ theory was true for him, but that it need not be true for everyone else?" (1 Cor. 4:7). True humility recognizes the source of all good things as rooted in God's grace, and it's grounded in a deep sense of dependence on Him. As I reflect on my own life and ministry, I'm reminded of the importance of humility in the face of success and recognition, and I strive to cultivate this virtue in my own heart and in the lives of those I serve.
