Your Question:
Will I ever be able to retire?
Answer:
As a man of faith, I've come to realize that true security and fulfillment in life can't be found in accumulating wealth or material possessions. The Bible teaches us that our focus should be on eternal things, not earthly ones. In Luke 12:15-21, Jesus warns against the dangers of materialism and the futility of devoting one's life to accumulating wealth. The truth is, there's no guarantee that we'll be alive a year from now, let alone have the means to retire. As the philosopher Chisholm notes, people often fall into ruts and adopt ways of seeing things that ultimately disappoint them. And even if we do manage to accumulate wealth, it's not a reliable source of security or happiness. In fact, the more we focus on material possessions, the more likely we are to be disappointed. As a pastor, I've seen many people who've placed their trust in wealth and material possessions, only to find that it's left them empty and unfulfilled. My prayer is that we would focus on the things that truly matter - our relationship with God, our relationships with others, and our pursuit of eternal things. In Christ, we have everything we need, and that's a far greater security than any amount of wealth or material possessions.
